Yes, you can wear makeup, but you’ll want to choose it carefully. Some cosmetics can cause acne. Even women who would not otherwise have acne can develop acne cosmetic from wearing makeup.
How often have you worn heavy foundation only to find that you have a big pimple appearing on the surface of your skin a few days later?
But does makeup really cause acne?
Makeup can cause acne if it’s not removed properly. Makeup particles clog the pores and along with dirt and sebum (oil) can lead to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Oily skin is already prone to open pores and excessive sebum so those with oily skin and combination skin types should wash their face at least twice a day with cleansers that are meant for their skin types.
How to combat it?
It may be beneficial to use cleansers that have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as an ingredient. Water-based moisturisers in lotion or serum form are more suitable and non-comedogenic. Exfoliate twice weekly with a gentle scrub, but if you have active acne, then exfoliate less often or seek a dermatologist’s help.
Opt for a sunscreen that is also non-comedogenic.
